Po'Boys PropTwisters History

The field we fly from is named Helms Field in honor of Olin Helms, the longest running member. The following are facts learned during an interview with Olin in January of 2002.
  • The Po'Boys Proptwisters was formed in 1982. Prior to that, another club named Modeler's Paradise occupied our field. The Modeler's Paradise was formed in 1964.
  • At one time, Helms Field comprised 7 acres. It had an asphalt runway, 2 buildings (one was heated), drink machines and other great amenities. During a lull in the local RC modeling scene, most of the field was returned to farm land. The remaining runway is the grass strip we fly from today.
  • The club membership has fluctuated over the years, sometimes as high as (a very crowded) 80 members. Today we enjoy an comfortable membership roster of around 60 flyers.
  • Back in the early days, Olin paid AMA dues of $7.50. At that time, club dues were $10.00.
  • For a few years in the 1970's, the club flew from a field in the hamlet of Bakers, NC.
  • At one time, RC flyers were required to hold valid CB licenses due to the frequencies and power of the radio equipment. Helms Field was checked for radio license compliance more than once during that period.
  • The youngest flying member was 8 years old. The oldest flying member is not saying his age, but he is 'in his 80's.
  • Years ago, the club has participated in airshows held at the Monroe Airport and sponsored by the Monroe Public Safety Department. At those airshows, the club would run exhibition RC flights in between the full-scale flying displays.
  • In April of 2007, the PoBoys PropTwisters vacated Helms Field due to sale of the property. Please contact the club secretary for information on our new field.
